Kottarakkara, a busy town in Kollam district, is known all over Kerala for its Ganapathi. On paper the temple is a Shiva temple – the old Kizhakkekara Shiva temple – but most pilgrims come for the small, child-like Mahaganapathi who shares Shiva's sreekovil. The town's name has become almost another word for unniyappam, the little sweet the Lord is believed to love.
The temple stands beside a large pond in the middle of the town. Families come before exams, new ventures and long journeys, Sabarimala pilgrims stop on the way to prepare their irumudi, and hardly anyone leaves without a packet of unniyappam prasadam.
The story goes that the legendary master carpenter Perunthachan was working at the Padinjattinkara Shiva temple nearby when he shaped a small Ganapathi out of a piece of jackfruit wood. He asked the priest there to install it, but was told that the temple belonged to Shiva alone. Perunthachan then took the idol to the Kizhakkekara Shiva temple, where the priest gladly accepted it and installed it inside Shiva's own sreekovil, facing south.
Devotees say the priest happened to be making appams at that moment and offered the very first ones to the new deity on a plantain leaf. Another version says the child Ganapathi seemed endlessly hungry until he was given small appams of rice flour, banana and jaggery. Either way, unniyappam became his offering – and the Ganapathi idol is said to face the temple kitchen, where the appams are fried, so that he can watch them being made.
Kottarakkara also holds a special place in the history of Kerala's arts. In the 17th century a prince of the local royal house, remembered as Kottarakkara Thampuran, composed Ramanattam, a dance-drama on the Ramayana that later grew into Kathakali; local tradition says his inspiration came from the Ganapathi of this temple. Today the temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board, and its rituals follow the tantri family of Tharananellur.

Footwear is left outside. Unniyappam prasadam is given out at the temple counters; on days when an Udayasthamana pooja is being conducted it may not be available, so check the notices if you are coming especially for it.
